A guardrail metric earns its name only when the team agrees to pause or reverse a change when it moves the wrong way. Decorative secondary charts do not count.
Pick harm that already worries someone
Ask support, finance, and onboarding owners what they fear if the experiment “wins” on the primary metric. Those fears often become better guardrails than generic engagement rates.
Keep the list short
Two guardrails usually beat six. Product experiment measurement suffers when every minor event becomes a veto and nobody remembers which one mattered.
Pre-commit the response
Write the action before exposure: stop the rollout, extend the window, or investigate instrumentation. Ambiguous “we will look into it” language invites post-hoc storytelling.
Our Metric Definition Workshop is built for teams that need this conversation held once, clearly, and in writing.
